Kilim rugs are a tapestry style textile woven in Iran, Pakistan and the Balkans. Decorative woven saddlebags, storage sacks, tent hangings, animal trappings and floor coverings have traditionally enhanced every aspect of tribal life, and are genuine expressions of tribal culture. Today a Kilim rug remains light and versatile, ready for a range of decor options such as wall hangings, cushion covers, ottomans and sofa covers. A Kilim rug can feature both soft and bold colours with geometrical patterns and reflects the traditions of its region.
Making a kilim is a highly regarded folk art and they are handmade with natural dye and wool. The key difference between a Kilim and other rugs is that they are a flatweave, and do not have a pile. They generally softer and thinner when compared to other rugs from this region, and some are also reversible. Quality of a Kilim can vary from inexpensive to museum quality pieces.
